Double-blind study shows CBD lowers blood pressure over 24 hours

This study wanted to determine if untreated high blood pressure and arterial stiffness (atherosclerosis) could be lowered with CBD. It was published in August 2023 in the journal Advances in Therapy.

It was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over pilot study on 16 patients with untreated high blood pressure (hypertension).

Patients orally ingested either 150mg CBD isolate or placebo every 8 hours for 24 hours - about 450mg CBD per day. The study measured ambulatory blood pressure and electrocardiogram (ECG) readings over the 24 hour period.

Results showed the following measures were all significantly lower (P < 0.05) after 24 hours on cannabidiol when compared to the placebo:

  • arterial stiffness (~ 0.7 m/s)
  • systolic blood pressure (~ 5 mmHg)
  • mean arterial pressure (~ 3 mmHg)

Authors' conclusion:

Our findings indicate that acute dosing of cannabidiol over 24 h can lower blood pressure and arterial stiffness in individuals with untreated hypertension.

Oral cannabidiol was safe and well tolerated with no development of new sustained arrhythmias.
